Chickpea cultivation is rapidly gaining popularity among Bulgarian farmers due to its drought tolerance, strong export demand, and favorable EU funding. To optimize fields for maximum yield, understanding specific agronomic requirements and financial incentives is essential.
Soil & Sowing Requirements
Chickpeas thrive in well-drained clay loam or sandy loam soils. Proper preparation begins with autumn deep plowing (25–28 cm), followed by early spring cultivation to conserve winter moisture.
In Bulgaria, the optimal sowing window opens in early spring, between March 1st and March 25th, as soon as soil temperatures reach 5–6°C. Early sowing ensures plants utilize winter moisture before summer heat waves. The ideal sowing depth is 5 to 7 cm.
Seeding Rates & Density
Achieving the right density is crucial for weed suppression and high productivity:
- Target Plant Density: 35 to 45 germinable seeds per square meter (approx. 35,000–45,000 seeds per decare).
- Seeding Rate by Weight: Roughly 14 to 16 kg per decare, depending on the thousand-seed weight (TSW).
Top Variety: Azkan from Kabuli family
The dominant chickpea variety in Bulgaria is Azkan. This Kabuli-type variety is highly preferred because it is drought-resistant, lodging-tolerant, and yields large, cream-colored seeds. Its upright growth makes it perfectly suited for direct machine harvesting.
Financial Incentives & EU Subsidies
Chickpea production benefits from targeted financial support under the EU Common Agricultural Policy. Bulgarian farmers qualify for coupled income support for protein-rich crops. For the 2025 campaign, this additional subsidy rate is set at €131.90 per hectare, making chickpeas a lucrative, low-risk rotation crop.
